Word War: Duel is a daily word game for iPhone. It keeps the format people already know, which is one word a day, six guesses and green-and-yellow feedback, and changes what happens to the result instead of changing the puzzle.

Fewest guesses wins the round. Ties break on solve time.

A battle is first to 10 round wins. A war is best of five battles. Teams average their members' guesses against the other side's.

Every player has a war running against "the Universe", which is the average of everyone who played that day, so the game works before you've persuaded a single friend to install it.

Description, short

A daily word game where everyone gets the same word, and the fewest guesses wins the round. Free on iPhone.

Description, long

The daily word puzzle is the most social thing on your phone that isn't actually social. Everyone you know solves the same five-letter word inside the same 24 hours, and the only way to compare is pasting a grid of coloured squares into a group chat and arguing about it.

Word War: Duel keeps that puzzle and scores it. Fewest guesses takes the round, first to 10 rounds takes a battle, best of five battles takes a war, so losing a day costs you a round rather than the whole thing. You can war a friend, a team (your side averages its members' guesses against theirs, which turns out to be the version group chats actually want), or the Universe: the average of everyone playing that day, which runs by default so there's never an empty lobby.

Free, no ads, no in-app purchases, iPhone only for now.

A note on Wordle

Word War: Duel is an independent game and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Wordle or The New York Times Company. "Wordle-style" is used here as the fastest honest way to describe the format, and that's the only claim being made.
